Those slots are for the planks for the timber man to stand on while cutting. This tree is exactly on the corner where the track goes to cactus.

KayZed on the AAWT
The Australian Alps Walking Track, AAWT, stretches from Walhalla, 200k east of Melbourne to Tharwa, 30k from Canberra. A total distance of 680k odd and elevation +/- 30,000m
Why? Because it was there :)
