Day 5 - Witses Hut to 4 Mile Hut via Kiandra

21k, +550m, -470m -bludge day.

Now at 4 Mile Hut. I took it easy today, gaining reception shortly after leaving Witses and sending messages, then I switched food and a few other things at Kiandra, made some calls and had a look around the ruins of Kiandra. Kiandra was settled when gold was discovered in Nov 1859. The Govt had roads and telegraph in by 1860 but by 1861 it was all over. A couple 100 people stayed and in the early 1900s it boasted Australia's 1st ski field. A few people continued to live here till their National Parks lease expired. Now there is just a shed for the snowplow. Photo is of tonight's hut. Built of ash slabs, corrugated iron and yes, kerosene tins. It was built in 1937 by a Kiandra local who picked over the mine tailings that fill the creek outside. It is just big enough for 1person, maybe 2 at a squeeze. Heading for the newly rebuilt O'Keefes Hut tomorrow so an early start required. Weather has broken. After 4 glorious hot days, there were light showers and overcast skies today. Wind picking up now so very nice to be in a hut.
